AICAR

AICAR is considered a synthetic analog of adenosine monophosphate (AMP). Both AICAR and AMP are classified as nucleotides, molecules that function as fundamental components of DNA and RNA and are also involved in cellular energy storage and transfer. Because AICAR structurally resembles AMP, it is believed to activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), an enzyme that is central in regulating cellular energy balance by promoting energy availability while limiting excessive energy storage.

AICAR has been investigated for several potential research applications in experimental models, including:

• Supporting insulin sensitivity by increasing glucose availability to muscle tissue
• Enhancing the breakdown and utilization of stored energy, particularly during ischemic conditions
• Reducing intracellular lipid accumulation in tissues such as the liver

AICAR may also influence fatty acid oxidation, mitochondrial biogenesis, and the preservation of slow-twitch, fatigue-resistant muscle fibres.
